Imagine your company’s employees using their breaks during the work day to relax, “shut down”, clear the cache of their own mental computers, un-plug from the hectic pace, and re-boot; returning to their work with a fresh start, recharged, once again feeling motivated and enthusiastic.

Background

Recently, scientists mapping brain activity with PET scans have shown that subjects looking at pictures, hearing soothing words and music, i.e., simply having thoughts about, listening to, and seeing images of natural scenery, have electro-chemical responses in specific areas of the brain even more effective in reducing stress than taking an actual vacation. Isn't it amazing that equivalent, if not more dramatic, responses result from visualization evoked from video and auditory stimulation than occur by actually being "out in nature"?

It has been known for decades that certain types of music produce a relaxation response in the brain as the brainwaves "entrain" to the rhythm; and it is a well accepted fact that by our own thoughts we can create a calm state of mind. It has also been proven that breathing fresh oxygen while stretching and releasing the muscles, relaxes the nerves, significantly reducing mental and physical tension.

If this is all true, then wouldn’t it be remarkable if we could provide the opportunity to do just that right within the workplace, as an innovative, cutting edge on-site employee benefit?

Now it’s possible. Here’s how.

In the Green Room

Visualize yourself getting up from your desk and entering a quiet room nearby that is full of lush plants and indoor trees, natural lighting and pictures of natural scenery on the walls. Individuals are sitting in comfortable positions, reading, listening to soothing music or guided relaxation on headphones. Others are doing a bit of stretching while breathing the fresh, clean air, facing a mirror; or following along with video instructional tapes. Some are simply relaxing while observing images of nature that appear on computer screens around the room or taking a "power Nap" with eyes closed.. Each employee, in his or her own way, is having an effective stress-reducing experience, beneficial to both the mind and body. Now it's your turn to do the same.

For a brief period of time in this room, we can allow ourselves to stop thinking about all of our worries, concerns, responsibilities, tasks and to-dos. No phones will ring. We can release the pressure. Inside The Green Room we are meant to simply take our mind off of things, stretch out and relax for a little while. By being able to accomplish this now and then throughout the day, we can derive great benefits both personally and professionally.

A Natural, Tranquil Environment Within the Workplace

While the eyes observe images of nature, and the ears are occupied only with conducive music, or the natural sounds of ocean waves, rainforests, waterfalls, etc., the thoughts tend to become quieter, the brainwaves are inclined to develop a tranquil (Alpha) rhythm, the nerves automatically settle down, the muscles release and relax. We can drift peacefully, for the moment, forgetting ourselves, our tasks, the world and its troubles. We begin to take deeper breaths, tensions let go.

While breathing the fresh, clean air that is being constantly generated within the room by living plants and trees (and negative ion generators), we can "clear our heads" to be more productive. From the simple act of observing and listening to nature, we feel somehow transformed, rejuvenated, refreshed. We are reminded of our part in the grand scheme of things beyond our immediate surroundings; on a deep, cellular level, we are remember that we are still in sync with nature. Our individual electro-magnetic frequencies are tuned back in to the wiring of the natural universe; we sense this and feel reconnected. The human mind and body work this way.

Of course, we tend to think that we can achieve this connection only when we are actually out in a natural environment, walking on the beach, through a rain forest, or hiking in the mountains. Unfortunately, modern life rarely permits those in-person experiences. Typically, we take vacations only once or twice a year. Perhaps we can escape for a weekend now and then. And even these trips are not always entirely conducive to reconnecting one on one with “Mother Nature”. With the stress of traveling today and the hectic pace of holiday activities, more often than not, we return home from so-called vacations even more frazzled than before we left. On a daily basis, now, The Green Room can provide employees with an opportunity to take an even more effective virtual mini-vacation whenever they simply need to "get away".

Conclusion

Now, yours can be one of the forward thinking, innovative companies that offers a cutting edge employee benefit: a comfortable room always available to “take ten”, unwind, have a drink of natural spring water, do a follow-along stretch, or a guided relaxation procedure, read something positive, take a refreshing glance at nature, or simply enjoy a few deep breaths in an oxygen-rich environment (right in the midst of a smoggy city during, or after the craziest, busiest work day). Authentic stress relief when its needed most! An alternative to the caffeine drinking, nicotine smoking break. Now you can give your employees a choice.

Can you visualize the astounding boost in productivity and morale, enhanced job satisfaction (less employee turnover), significantly reduced absenteeism and sick leave (resulting from stress-related syndromes so common today)? Imagine the reduction in health care costs!

Easily, and inexpensively, the necessary components can be installed in any enclosed office space. The existing training room can be conveniently converted, deriving even more beneficial use of the facility. Implementing The Green Room concept will clearly demonstrate that your company honestly cares about its most valuable asset, the people whose hard work produces its ongoing success; and they'll become even more effectve in doing the job they're there to do.
